French Property in the Dordogne Perigord - the old name for the Dordogne, was divided into four areas; the Perigord Pourpre, Perigord Noir, Perigord Blanc and Perigord Vert. The Perigord Pourpre rests in the South and South West of the Dordogne and derives it’s name from the abundance of the purple grapes well known to the area for producing the vin rouge appellation Bergerac. There are a host of well known and interesting towns and villages within the area and beyond, such as Bergerac - the principal town of the region with it’s airport serviced by Ryanair and Flybe. To the east of Bergerac there are the riverside villages of Creysse, Couze and Lallinde. To the South-east of Bergerac, are the bastides Issigeac, Beaumont, Monpazier and Villefranche du Perigord. To the South is the world famous Chateau Monbazillac, well known for its sweet desert wine, Sogoules known for its wine fair and Eymet for its cricket team. The area west of Bergerac borders on to Gironde, the world leading wine producing department of the Bordeaux region, and includes the villages of Villefranche de Lonchat, Montravel - with its new appellation rouge, Velines, Montcaret and Saint Michel de Montaigne. Bordering the Perigord Poupre but still within the Dordogne are the towns of Montpon, Moussidan, Riberac and Villamblard and of course Perigueux - the capital of the Dordogne. Just outside the Dordogne, St Emillion - world famous for its red wine, Ste Foy a la Grande - the border town between the Dordogne and the Gironde known for its music, theatre and river promenade, Duras - well known for its fortified hill top castle and Castillon la Bataille - famous for the battle which ended the one-hundred years war in 1453. The area has become the most popular in South-West France for British tourists, holiday makers and property owners - the Cotswolds in the sunshine.
