Property Rights in France: Openings in Buildings

Tuesday 16 June 2009

We are pleased to release today a further section of our 'Guide to Property Rights in France'.

In this new section we consider the rules governing the creation of openings in buildings.

There are specific laws as to whether you are permitted to create an opening, in order to avoid overlooking.

These rules concern rural properties as much as those in urban areas, as the boundary of the the property is used in the calculation, not the building itself.

However, there are also dispensations to the rule, the most important of which is a right to light called the jours de souffrance.

You can read more in our Guide to Creating Openings in Buildings.
