European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Wednesday 15 July 2009

What are the rules and procedures on the use of the European Health Insurance card for visitors to France and expat residents in France?

In 2004 the EHIC replaced the familiar E111 form for travel into Europe. For those from the UK the EHIC is valid for five years.

Every member of the family traveling with you will need their own card. It is obtainable by phone or via the internet.

You should receive reimbursement of around 70% of any health costs you incur in France, but only 'necessary' treatment is eligible.

Expat residents of France also need one when travelling outside of France. Some will need a card from the French authorities, while others will still need to make application to the UK.

You can read more in our guide to the European Health Insurance Card and Travelling abroad from France.
