The French aperitif
In France, people used to take the aperitif before a meal. At the beginning, it was supposed to allow you to be more hungry and to enjoy your meal. Nowadays, it has became a tradition and an excellent way to socialise.
Before a drink, French people used to propose a toast and say “Tchin Tchin” or “Santé” which is the equivalent of “Cheers” in English. The aperitif is usually accompanied by aperitif cakes or peanuts, olives, crips etc. The aperitif is usually drunk about seven o’clock but this can depend on the region and personal preferences.
The choice of drinks is large, with variation in each French region.
The strong alcohol : Whisky, Cognac, Gin-Fizz, Punch, Sangria, Pastis , Bourbon ,Vodka, Martini etc.
Special aperitifs : Pineau des Charentes (dans les Charentes), Floc de Gascogne (dans le Gers), Trouspinnette (Vendée), …
You can obviously taste fine french wines, with a preference for white wines, or even a glass of Champagne !
