Burgundy Population
Three principal communesDijon (236,953)Dijon, the world's mustard capital, is a very pleasant and prosperous city. From the early 11th century until the late 1400s it was home to the Dukes of Burgundy and was a place of tremendous wealth and power and one of the greatest centres of art, learning and science. Thanks to its large student population it's today much more than just a heritage site and is actually a very modern feeling town, with a bright cultural scene. If you wish to live in a small, manageable yet modern and lively city then Dijon is an ideal place to set up your home. Chalon-sur-Saône (75,447)This town, situated on a broad section of the River Saône, is a port and busy industrial centre. It's also a thriving business centre and there are often visiting trade fairs that take over the town. It's worth visiting during one of their festivals such as the carnival in March when there's a hilarious parade of giant masks or in July when there's a national festival of street artists, as well as October for the film festival. Nevers (57,515)This small provincial city on the confluence of the rivers Loire and Nièvre, is known for its nougatine candies and fine porcelain which are made in three workshops and sold in a few elegant, expensive shops in town. The pleasant old town dates back to the twelfth century. In the summer Nevers puts on a good open-air concert programme.
