Burgundy Transport


  • Burgundy is located in the centre of western europe, with Geneva, Lyon, Paris, and the Alps within 3 hours driving distance.
  • Burgundy is in the heart of a large and diversified communication network linking North Europe and South Europe. Main european capitals being less than 4 hours by train.
  • From London, the best way to travel to Burgundy region is by train and by car. The Burgundy is reachable by 5 hours driving from the Channel tunnel or a five hour TGV trip from London.
  • Burgundy has good motorway connections with the north as with the south of France and efficient railway network including TGV and local trains. Unfortunaletly flights from London are not available, but will fly soon into Dijon airport.
  • To make your trip easy and your holiday in France pleasant, you could also travel through the famous Burgundy canals which encircle the region.


Travelling to Burgundy by Air
Airport
The lack of airport in Burgundy is a handicap for the regional development.
The town of Dijon want to re-establish the line Dijon-London from the regional airport Dijon Bourgogne Longvic, closed for rentability problems.
A such line would place Burgundy only over 1hours of London.
Currently various international and other independant airlines operate services to Paris, arriving at Paris Charles de Gaulle or Orly airports.Then TGV and car offer direct access to Burgundy.
Travelling to Burgundy by Train
Passengers
The regional network accounts 150 train stations across Burgundy and transport more than 35000 passengers per day.

Regional Rail Network
Burgundy accounts for about 2000 kms of rail network including 298 km of high speed line.


National Rail Network
The TGV service in the Burgundy region is excellent and put Dijon only 4 hours from London.
TGV Paris-Dijon (1hr 45mins)
TGV Paris Mâcon-Loche -(1hr 30mins)
TGV Paris Le Creusot - (1hr 15mins)
TGV Paris Lyon(2hrs)
TGV Rhin-Rhône including an east line Dijon-Mulhouse, complemention estimation date 2010, and future lines T.G.V. Dijon-Lille et Yonne Méditerranée still as project.

International Rail
Connection to Eurostar via Paris.
Connection to Eurotunnel via Calais.

Travelling to Burgundy by Road
Daily Trafic level
The traffic on the motorway A6 around Beaune accouts for more than 64000 vehicles/day.


Road network
Burgundy accounts for 660 km of motorways and about 1500 kms of secondary roads.

Mains motorways
Some of the major motorways in France pass through Burgundy making it easily accessible from the whole of Europe
A6 "autoroute Paris-Lyon: from Paris to Lyon via Auxerre, Beaune, Chalon sur Saône, Mâcon,Villefranche-sur-Saône.
from Beaune to Besançon, Mulhouse to Germany.
A5: between Paris and Troyes , axis Sens-Troyes-Auxerre on 238 kms.
A31:from Dijon to Nancy and from Luxembourg border to Beaune, on 232 kms.
A38:from Pouilly-en-Auxois to Dijon, crossing by a channel the "Canal de Bourgogne".

Burgundy is located just 100km driving distance south of Paris and 80km north of Lyon

Travelling to Burgundy by Sea
Mains Harbours
Dijon, the most important city along The canal of Burgundy, mostly used for cruiser has a harbor for leisure boats.

Canals Network
Burgundy has a well-developped network accounting for 1200 kilometres of canals and rivers, exclusively used by riverboat tourism.
Commercial boats only used the 155km of Rhône-Saône rivers axis.

Ferry Ports
There is no ferry port in Burgundy. The nearest are:
In Brittany : Roscoff from Plymouth via Brittany Ferries or St Malo from Poole via Condor Ferries.
In Spain Bilbao from Portsmouth via Acciona Trasmediterranea or Santander from Plymouth via Brittany Ferries.
