Perche Traditional Locatures
Traditional houses in the Perche area of Centre are called locatures. These properties can also be found in the neighbouring Berry area.
These generally modest Perche houses were inhabited by poor farmers that worked for the owner of the house. A rich landowner generally owned several locatures to be able to welcome the temporary or permanent workers.
Locatures are generally fitted with a bread oven and one or two chimneys. The locatures you may find today in the French Perche area are generally more modern and larger houses than the original ones, that originally only had one room.

These Centre properties are half-timbered, with wood as dominant material, exposed beams in the house and around the doors, as well as lenghtwise more than depthwise rooms.
The colombage (half-timbering) system of these Perche traditional houses is made of timber frames, cob and sometimes bricks. On the steeply pitched roof, red / brown flat tiles are used.
The properties you will find today are no more single locatures built in the traditional way, but most of the time they are made of several ancient Perche locatures.
