Corsica Chateaux and Castles

Being placed in the middle of the mediterranean sea, Corsica is a strategic point for the control of this area. It has therefore known a very disturbed military background and still shows this through its old castles.

Citadelle de Bonifacio: this small citadelle is located on the southernmost end of the Corsican island. It has played a major strategic role in history thanks to its perfect location and was taken several times during seiges. Nevertheless, it nowadays is one of the most visited places in Corsica thanks to its impressive military deseign.

Citadelle de Calvi: built in the 13th century, the Calvi citadelle stand on a rocky cliff. It is an old fortress that has high outer walls protecting the houses inside. The remparts were often modified by adding small bastions and now follow elegantly the cliff line.

Citadelle de Corte: the old capital of Corsica of the 18th century still has the only university of the island. It is an old defensive point, strategicaly placed in the centre of the island, used to control the passage ways between both ends of the island.
