Languedoc Geography and Key Data
Surface Area
Languedoc consists of 27,376 km² equivalent to about 4 % of France's total surface area. It accounts for 2,548,000 inhabitants which gives a population density of 93 /km2.

Departments
Languedoc consists of 5 departments: Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère, Pyrénées-Orientales.


Communes
Languedoc is composed by 1,545 communes.
Coast and Water in Languedoc
Sea
Languedoc is bordered along its south coast by the Mediterranean Sea.

Beaches
Languedoc’s littoral stretches on 40,000 hectares. The excellent quality of its swimming waters allows it to be part of the ‘European Blue Flag’ label. It accounts for numerous beaches of different types: popular sea resorts, nudist beaches, harbours, ‘wild’ beaches... The choice is wide.

Freshwater ponds and lakes
Ponds are to be found mostly in the Aude, Gard and Hérault departments while there are more lakes in Lozère and Pyrénées Orientales.
Mountains Range in Languedoc
Mountains range
Languedoc is bordered by 2 mountains: south west by the Pyrénées and west by the Cévennes, part of the Massif Central .

Ski Areas
Languedoc accounts for 17 ski resorts, the most popular ones being Font Romeu and Les Angles in Pyrénées.

Forests
Woods are covering 1/3 of the Languedoc’s territory. 6 forests are to be discovered: Bois de Fontanilles, Forêt de Fontfroide, Forêt des Fanges, Forêt du Haut-Vallespir, Forêt de Mercoire, Forêt du Mont-Aigoual.

Protected areas
Languedoc accounts for 65 % of open spaces.

Fauna and Flora
The region nestles several endemic species.
