Thanks to a favourable climate which allows vineyards to thrive, the Poitou-Charentes region of France can boast having high-quality vineyards. However the production of local wine is not the main activity of this French region which is more used to producing liqueur like Cognac which is the local speciality.

Fine wines from Poitou-Charentes are:

  • Vins de Pays Charentais
  • Vins des Deux Sèvres
  • Vins Saumur de la Vienne
  • Vins de Haut Poitou
  • Vins du Thouarsais

Top Tip!
Under the “Vins de Pays Charentais” name, you will find some really tasty, mild and fine French wines, renowned for their harmony with all kinds of meat. There are red, rosé and white Poitou-Charentes wines as well.

Usually the most renowned ones are wines of Haut Poitou, produced with Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Gamay as well as Cabernet will elegantly accompany your cooking.
  • The Vins des deux Sèvres French wines are produced from Chenin Blanc or Pineau de Loire (white wines), Cabernet franc, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Pineau d’Aunis (Rosé and Red wines).
  • The Vins du Thouarsais wines produce more white wines from Chenin Blanc than other wines even if you can find some red wines like cabernet and Gamay.
  • Vins Saumur de la Vienne are issued from few varietals like Chenin blanc for the white wine and Cabernet Franc as well as Cabernet Sauvignon for the red and Rosé wines.

These wines are really appreciated for their being light-bodied. Particularly fresh, you will savour their vivacity when consumed with any red meats or fishes.
