front ancient chapel with new temporary door 3m high
Recognising the chapel's GREAT POTENTIAL, our French architect has drawn up two sets of plans, which adhere to the "spirit " of the chapel:
The plans for the larger additionare about to be submitted for planning permission. In the design, the chapel , with double vaulted ceiling ( imaginea magnificent chandelier from the rafters!!) is the main salon. At the rear is a door to a new T-section which includes a full kitchen; family room with wide French doors to the terrace, pool and garden; laundry/bathroom; third bedroom/study with French doors to a courtyard to the right front of the chapel. A spiral staircase leads to the first floor landing with room for a computer area. There are 2 generous bedrooms ( 1 with en suite) and each with French doors to the covered balcony overlooking the pool (ALREADY FINISHED) and garden. There is an additonal bathroom on this level also. There is also a lock up garage in the plan. As our photos indicate, when we found and fell in love with the chapel, it was crying out for attention! We worked diligently to remove years of detritus, including trees and ivy which had taken over the inside. The beauty of the building became even more apparent andnot only did we discover clay tiles on the floor ( age unknown), but we also unearthed an ancient marker outside the front door. We have created a temporary , protective door on the main entrance, another at the back, and blocked the lovely arched windows. All stones that have become dislodged are stored on the site and the stone mason who examined the building will be able to use them in the restoration. He is confident the restoration can be done and the village would love it to happen! All services are readily available nearby so water and electricity andmains drainagecan be easily connected. There is a swimming pool ( which was installed prior to restoration as there was a small window of access across nearby fields for the contractors toreach the back of the chapel with heavy digging equipment) which is chemically treated and covered with a heavy protective cover. The pump and accessories are all housed in the box we built. The chapel is surrounded on two sides by open fields, dispelling any feeling of being "hemmed in. From the front door, the view across the little road in front of the chapel is also to green fields and blue skies! About the village and surrounds Facilities in the village include a mini supermarket where bread, provisions and papers can be bought. It also has its own ATM. There are also a Marie, post office, restaurant/bar (with holiday accommodation associated),2 churches, and an attractively- restored, covered lavoir. It is close to Eymet, Duras and Bergerac with lots of great restaurants, shopping, cinemas etc. Bergerac's airport is 20 minutes away. The countryside is beautiful and covered in vineyards with cellar doors just waiting for visitors to sample! The popular Buddhist retreat, "Plum Farm" is also nearby. Why sell? We remain passionate about the restoration of this fabulous building.. but also recognize that we have too many projects on the go to give this project the focus it so truly deserves This stone chapel (10m x 6.5m external) has an amazing history, being constructed in the 12th centuryby Protestant Huguenots. Locals indicate it was in continuous use until World War II. With sympathetic restoration, it will make a stunning detached dwelling with in-ground pool ( already there!)
