The property.
Situated on the banks of the river Gelise in front of the original mill and weir the cottage faces south-west at the head of a valley surrounded by lush farmland.
A large garden encircles the property and the river meanders around an adjoining field, ideal for picnics and fishing from the river bank. Apart from the mill which is occupied by the owners, there are no other properties nearby. The Gelise is a category 2 river with black-bass, pike and carp (night fishing for carp is a local pastime). Some fishing equipment is available.
The region — Val d’Albret, Lot et Garonne in South West Aquitaine
Roman Ruins, Bastides, Castles and Fortified Medieval Towns, a rich and romantic history. Today a land of gastronomic delights in beautiful rolling countryside famous for wines, Armagnac and foie gras.
The cottage is situated at the south eastern limit of the Lot et Garonne (Department 47) The Gers (Department 32) next door, is 3 miles away to the east and The Landes (Department 40)is a few miles to the west.
The pretty village of Mezin is 1.1/2 miles away and has all the necessary shops – butcher; baker; grocer; patisserie; delicatessen; pharmacy; bank – with ‘hole in the wall’; newsagents; hairdressers; library; plus several small restaurants and a bar. There is a full village market on Sunday morning and a small farmer’s market with fish van on Thursday morning.
Mezin is on the Chemin de Compostelle – pilgrims have been travelling past here for centuries since the middle-ages – and they still pass by today. Nearby a small footpath leads through the woods across farmland to the village.
This is a quiet and tranquil area ideal for observing nature. The Forests of the Landes start on the other side of the river and cover several thousand acres before meeting up with the coast along the Bay of Biscay . Deer and Wild Boar wander across the surrounding farmland in and out of the forests. Red Squirrel, Genet and Foxes and many other animals reside in the neighbouring woodland. There are Golden Oriole (not often seen, but frequently heard) Green as well as Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers, Hoopoe, Heron and Kingfisher, Redstart and Nuthatch.........
Within minutes of the cottage you can be in the beautiful rolling countryside of the Gers with its rich farming land or wandering among the vineyards of the Lot et Garonne, sampling locally produced wines - Buzet – Cotes de Gascony - or Armagnac. The Bordeaux, Cotes de Duras and Entre deux Mer wine growing areas are not far away.
Nerac is approximately 7 miles away to the west. This bustling town on the river Baise was once the home of Henri d’Albret, and the kings of Navarre one of whom later became Henri IV, King of France. The remaining section of their Chateau stands in the middle of the town overlooking the river. Nerac has an important Market on Saturday mornings also a variety of shops and restaurants, some along the river’s edge. There is a cinema and a theatre.
The town of Condom is approximately 12 miles away to the east and is also on the river Baise; well worth visiting its Cathedral and riverside.
Both Nerac and Condom offer short river cruises on the Baise.
