The Nievre department is crossed by La Loire river which is the longest river in France and Nievre is also well known for its white wine, Pouilly Fume. The surrounding area is a haven for cyclists, walkers, lovers of water sports, horse riders and those who just want peace and quiet. Visit Vezelay and its famous Basilique Ste-Madeleine, the Abbaye de Fontenay, Chablis and its wines, Paray-le-Monial and its Basilique du Sacre-Coeur, Chateau Chinon and Mitterand's museum, to name just a few of the attractions in the area. You will find small villages and towns nestling in the countryside. Many of these villages hold regular markets and fetes for visitors to enjoy. There are 3800 miles of paths for walkers in the area. The walks have starting points close to La Creuse as well as further afield. For motor racing and motorbike racing fans the Grand Prix circuit at Magny-Cours is only 70 kilometres away. In Chateau-Chinon itself one will find various amenities; schools, doctor, bakeries, a post office, florist, banks, hotels, restaurants and a supermarket. Chateau-Chinon is located about two hours and a half from Lyon international airport, from which one can find low cost flights to the UK.
