Local description
This elegant nineteenth century ‘petit château’ is at the edge of a village on the border of
the Berry and Touraine regions. The property is featured on old postcards and in booklets about the region.
The house has been renovated and redecorated to an exceptional standard and is surrounded by its own beautiful parkland, meadows and woodland, covering an area of four hectares.
There are extensive outbuildings including a charming cottage once occupied by a caretaker. Along one boundary of the property is a 7ft high rendered stone wall of about 200 metres in length, with three large ornamental gates.
The living space of the house is approximately 300 sq. metres comprises:
Ground Floor
Very large entrance hall leading to two salons (connected by beautifully decorated double doors); dining room; large kitchen; walk-in pantry; utility room; lavatory with wash hand basin.
First Floor
A fine oak staircase and landing, leading to five bedrooms. (The master bedroom is the largest room in the house) with bathroom en suite. Two other bedrooms have en suite shower rooms (all with lavatories).
Top Floor
(which could provide extensive further accommodation), consists of a landing, a very large loft room with solid oak beams, and five smaller rooms (currently undecorated and unused). Plumbing is in place for a potential new bathroom.
Cellar
An impressive, vaulted, stone cellar is divided into three sections.
Adjoining the house is a separate boiler room with oil and wood fired boilers. The house is now connected to mains drainage.
The house is packed with original features. There are seven marble fireplaces, two of which – in the main salon and the dining-room – are regularly used in winter. Several rooms are enhanced by superb cornices, ceiling roses and other original decorations to which no photographs can do justice!
Renovations of the outbuildings are incomplete, leaving them adaptable to whatever use a new owner may prefer – gites, holiday cottages, workshops, garages, stables etc. (There is a stone, cement-floored garage suitable for two medium-size cars).
The park contains flowerbeds, a variety of shrubs and hundreds of trees, including oak, beech, horse-chestnuts, magnolia, catalpas, ginko, bilobas; acacias, two huge sequoias and numerous other conifers. There are also some very productive apple (some rare varieties), cherry, plum, redcurrant, pear and walnut trees, plus grapevines.
A well, serviced by a new electric pump, supplies water for a large area of the garden and grounds.
The local area is a relaxed and friendly rural commune consisting of the main village, several attractive hamlets and numerous farms. The château is a five minute walk from the centre of old the old village, which provides a butcher’s shop, two bakeries, a well-stocked grocery store, two café-bars, a popular restaurant and a newsagent/gift shop. There is also a primary school and free bus services take children to and from what we are told are excellent schools in the large towns of Le Blanc and Châteauroux.
There is a food market every week and many farms sell fruit, vegetables and cheeses direct from the producer. (The region is noted for its goats cheeses). The local village also contains an excellent library/mediatheque and a noted archeological museum,
Extensive shopping and commercial facilities are available in the town of Le Blanc, a twenty minute drive away, and there are supermarkets, shops, banks, pharmacies, restaurants etc. at Tournon St. Martin (ten minutes) and Yzeure (fifteen minutes).
Le Blanc has a modern hospital and several medical consultants. There are two hospitals and a range of medical/dental specialists at Châtellerault (forty minutes).
The best-known cities in the region are Poitiers (1 hour) and Tour (90 minutes). All within a short (day trip) distance are numerous historic old buildings (churches, abbeys and, of course, grand Châteaux of the Loire), and places renowned for their beauty. Angles sur Anglin (17 minutes) is rightly listed as one of France’s most beautiful villages and is a favourite haunt of artists.
The countryside is varied. To the east is the vast national park of Le Brenne with its hundreds of lakes (many originally excavated by mediaeval monks in order to breed fish). Le Brenne’s amazing array of birds and animals attracts thousands of nature lovers from all over Europe. The landscape to the North, West and South is rolling farm and woodland with beef and dairy cattle, sheep, wheat, barley, sunflowers, maize etc.
From Châtellerault there are regular TGV services to the south (e.g. Bordeaux and Toulouse) or to Paris. Travelling time to the Gare Montparnasse is one and a quarter hours.
Currently there are numerous budget-airline services to the UK and other parts of Europe from three easily accessible airports (at Poitiers, Tours and Limoges).
The village is the scene of a variety of enjoyable activities throughout the year. There are village fêtes, exhibitions, dinner-dances, antique fairs etc. There is a tremendous community spirit and civic pride, but most important is the warmth and helpfulness of the local people.
