The development is located within walking distance (less than 800 m) from the central beach of the bay of Banyuls and the leisure harbour. The neighbourhood is one of villas or low rise buildings. The river banks of La Baillaury planted with robust palm trees offer a nice walk with views on the Pyrenees and the vineyards growing all around Banyuls.
The town of Banyuls:
Nestled between the Pyrenees mountain range and the Mediterranean sea, Banyuls sur mer is a charming small seaside town. It is built along 2 coves of the dramatic Vermilion coast with the Pyrenees as a background and terraced vineyards. It has the charms of a true Southern small town, with a seafront of cafés and restaurants sheltered by impressive palm trees and centennial plane trees. Formerly a village of fishermen and vine growers, the town started to be built at the end of the XIXth century with the arrival of railways; therefore the architectural style bears testimony of these times and provide the town with a timeless charm not often found in seaside resorts.
Banyuls is renowned in France for its wines. Vine has been grown on the steep hills of the Pyrenees since the Romans' times and the scenery provided by terraced vineyards rolling down into a deep blue sea is rather spectacular. On top of being spectacular the Banyuls vineyard is rather festive in that it provides sweet and fruity wines ideal for " l'aperitif" and the AOC Banyuls (Appelation d'Origine Contrôlée) is one of the oldest used in France.
Further to being a vine growing place (which is always interesting!) Banyuls commands access to the beautiful Vermilion Coast where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean Sea and thus create a dramatic landscape of coves and steep hills planted with vineyards, olive and pine trees. The coast is beautifully shaped and took its name of Côte Vermeille (vermilion coast) after the colour of its rocky schist steep hills at sunshine. In Paulilles, a beautifully preserved natural site recently re-developed in the north of Banyuls offers a succession of natural and unspoilt coves. Given its tormented relief the rocky coast is a renowned snorkeling and scuba diving paradise. It is protected by the only Submarine Natural Reserve in France. Spain is at the next road twist and the Pyrenees offer plenty of outdoor activities in winter as in summer. The hinterland territory offers also plenty of treasures, because it is even more undiscovered than the coast. Yet there are wonderful, wild, rough landscapes maybe at the image of the tormented history of the Cathars and the many castles and fortresses they have left behind.
