Argelès enjoys a blessed position, at the foot of the Pyrenees, amidst vineyards and along a coastline of clear waters partly flat with a long sandy beach of 7 km and partly rocky on 2 km. Its Blue Flag (Pavillon bleu d’Europe) rewards the quality of the sea water, beach equipments and quality of life. Argelès is surrounded by two Natural Reserves: one up North, Le Mas de Larrieu, in the mouth of the Tech River covering 145 ha (358 acres) of reeds, meadows and dunes and shelter to wild birds. In the South West the Natural Reserve of La Massane, also called Forest of Les Couloumates stretches over 300 ha (740 acres) in the foothills of the Pyrenees at altitudes between 600 m to 1200 m with Pic des 4 Termes at its highest point. A coastal path also starts North of Argelès and continues all the way down towards the rocky coastline with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean and leads to two rocky coves and further down south to Collioure and Port-Vendres in a dramatic landscape of steep hills planted with vineyards and rolling down into a deep blue sea. Argelès is composed of 4 very different areas. Argelès-Village, an old typical Catalan village with narrow streets, squares with cafés and restaurants shaded by old plane trees, a crenellated tower church of the 14th century and ramparts. Argelès-Plage is, as indicated in its name, directly along the coastline, with a seafront planted in lush Mediterranean vegetation and nice villas along quiet streets planted with pine trees. The seafront is bordered by a 12 ha (29 acres) pine wood planted at the end of the 19th century. Port-Argelès is a harbour equipped with 750 moorings and providing all type of services. Le Racou (meaning little spot in Catalan) at the end of the long sandy beach and just at the foot of the rocky coast is a charming place where time seems to have stopped in the sand alleys bordered by wooden bungalows directly built on the beach in a joyful mix of colours and styles. With 10,000 inhabitants (and much more in summer of course) Argelès is the 5th town of Pyrenees Orientales and one with the highest demographic growth. Part of its year-round appeal comes from its outstanding geography, its sunny and warm climate and the original and cheerful Catalan culture that one can sample in its gastronomy, wines and many markets with fresh locally-grown produce.
