About this property   Picture yourself waking up to the sun rising over the Mediterranean, just outside your bedroom window. Or lingering over a glass of wine and watching the sun set over the Pyrenees. This 2-bedroom, 53 m2 apartment has a 70 m2 patio overlooking sea and mountains.   The south-western exposure guarantees sunshine, even in the heart of winter. In addition to the patio, there is a delightful little “Romeo and Juliet” balcony off the living room.

 The interior is light and airy, with a 3-metre-high ceiling and lovely period chandeliers.  Newly renovated in a 1920s art deco-style mansion (also known in France as an "hôtel particulier") the apartment, located on the second floor, is just a 5-minute walk from shops, services, the beach and an international train station.  Original floors from the era have been preserved in the bedrooms, along with the shuttered windows.  The bathroom has  an extra-long tub, shower head, dual-flush toilet, washing machine, vanity, mirror, plus plenty of shelf space.  It also has a large window that opens onto the patio.  The fitted, modern kitchen has a good-sized fridge and freezer, 4-element hob (ceramic glass heating element), oven, three-speed fan, double sink and loads of cupboards.   French doors in the living room open onto the spacious patio, with a panoramic view of the village, the Mediterranean and the mountains.  The patio also offers the possibility of creating a roof-top garden with a variety of Mediterranean plants. 

 The apartment is quiet, with no neighbors above or any shared interior walls. All windows have shutters, ensuring total privacy.  Security is guaranteed by the outer gate with video-intercom.  The sale includes a private parking spot within the pleasantly landscaped grounds of the building, as well as additional storage space in the “cave” (also suitable for storing wine, of which there is plenty in the region!).    Kitchen:  fridge/freezer, cooker, microwave, oven, vacuum cleaner, iron, various pots, pans, crockery, glasses, utensils, cutlery, serving dishes, etc.  Living room: Solid pine dining table, 10 wrought iron chairs. Three-person sofa, wicker arm-chair, area rug and corner table, all lighting, satellite TV, DVD player and stand.   Main bedroom: queen-size bed, 2 small rugs, two night tables, large wardrobe, all lighting, all bedding, including sheets, pillows, blankets and duvets.  Second bedroom:  Sofa bed (sleeps two), small rug, chest of drawers (5 drawers), bookcase, radio-cassette-CD player, all lighting.   Patio:  large awning, wood table and six matching chairs, parasol, BBQ, lounge chair, various potted plants in ceramic pots.  Bathroom:  washing machine, towels.  Location The property is on the sea, with mountains and vineyards above, and only two hours’ drive or train ride from Barcelona      Unlike many other towns along the coast, Cerbère is not an artificial holiday-makers’ village. It has its own personality and charm, including beautiful period architecture. The people are friendly and welcoming and…still French!  Amenities include: two bakeries, supermarket, grocery, butcher, hairdresser, clothing boutique, bank, souvenir shops, newsagent, restaurants and cafes. The nearest town up the coast is Banyuls-sur-Mer, renowned for its thalassotherapy centre and its wine.  On the Spanish side, just half an hour away, is Figueres, a bustling market town and birthplace of Salvador Dali.  Within less than five minutes, you are across the border and on the Costa Brava.  The nearest airport in France is Perpignan, about 1.5 hours’ drive away, with daily flights on Ryanair and other budget airlines.  On the Spanish side, only an hour’s drive away, is Girona airport.  An important hub for Ryanair, it offers daily flights to dozens of destinations.   

Things to see and do

The coast has sparkling clear blue waters and sheltered coves, perfect for sunbathing. Swimming, sailing, snorkeling and scuba diving are there for the asking in the marine reserve that runs between Cerbère and Banyuls.  If you get tired of the beach, there’s no end of hiking trails and picnicking spots in the mountains or the back country. In the late autumn, winter and early spring, good skiing can be had on many of the nearby slopes.  Golf and tennis are available at nearby Argeles-sur-Mer or St. Cyprien. History and culture are also close at hand - in Collioure, Céret, Perpignan or any number of beautiful medieval villages on both sides of the border.   Great shopping in Perpignan, which also has numerous art galleries, museums, cafes and restaurants in the historic city centre.   If you are a wine-lover, the region (including on the Spanish side) is dotted with vineyards throughout.   With the train station just a few minutes away, it is also possible to pop down to Barcelona for a day's shopping and sightseeing, and not have to bother with a car.
