Description

La Bergerie is a recently renovated stone cottage with lovely woodland and pastoral views, in a peaceful hamlet only 1 km from a village with shops, restaurant, bars and supermarket, and just over 20 minutes walk from a lake with a lovely sandy beach. It sleeps up to 8 people in two twin and two double bedrooms. Also on the first floor is one of two shower-rooms. Downstairs, there is the large entrance hall, a spacious living & dining room with an imposing fireplace, a roomy fitted kitchen, also with a large granite fireplace, a second shower-room and separate toilet. Both fireplaces are fully functional. Underneath all of this is a cellar which is equipped as a utility room, with sink, washing machine, tumble drier, iron and ironing board. The house is full of character with lots of oak beams and other original features. It is comfortably furnished, and has a beautiful dining table which will easily seat 8 people. Equipment includes a TV/Video, hi-fi with CD, tape deck & radio. The kitchen has an electric cooker, dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave, toaster, and electric kettle. Heating is by electric storage heaters on the ground floor, and fitted convector heaters upstairs. At the front of the house, the private and pretty garden runs to about 550 m2, mainly laid to grass and gravel, (so theres lots of room for ball games). It contains many mature plants, trees and vines, and a moss covered stone bench. There is also a working well, with its original pump, which we use for watering the garden, but for safety reasons the hatch is fixed down. There is a gravelled and shaded area for sitting out, along with lots of outdoor furniture, some sun beds, a Chimnea patio heater and a large sunshade. There are two barbeques, and a boules pitch. Off road parking, for up to three cars is at the rear of the house on the grass verge. For visitors with young children, we can provide the following equipment free of charge: wooden cot safety gates for the top and bottom of the staircase a stroller type pushchair mesh fireguards for both fireplaces electric bottle warmer electric steriliser high chair baby bath baby changing mat baby monitor potty feeding utensils assortment of toys, books and games garden games inflatable paddling pool The minor road at the rear of the house is very quiet, but in any case the garden is gated and secure for children. The surrounding area. La Bergerie is situated on the lower slopes of Les Monts Blond, in the hamlet of Puymenier, about one kilometre from the ancient village of Cieux. There are only eight houses in Puymenier. Everyone is very friendly, and will appreciate exchanging a word or two in passing. This is a working community, with no other holiday homes. The beach and lake. The lake is just over 20 minutes walk, or 3 minutes drive La Bergerie. Fishing permits are available from the Tabac. Swimming is allowed from the beach on the far side of the lake, with designated paddling and swimming areas for children. In July and August a lifeguard is in attendance. The village of Cieux The origins of Cieux go back to the 9th Century, and in the surrounding area, to the stone-age, with standing stones and megaliths still surviving to this day. The village church dates from the 11th Century. In more recent times, the village provided much support to the French resistance during the second world war. Today, it is a quiet, friendly working village, set in tranquil unpolluted countryside. The village, which has about 1000 inhabitants, is in the Haute Vienne department, at an altitude of 330m. It is 29km from Limoges, 17km from Bellac and 19km from St Junien. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the village from La Bergerie (and a bit longer to walk back if you call in for a drink while youre there!) You will find all the shops and services you need here. The Auberge La Source has a good, comfortable restaurant, serving a wide range of French food, and a friendly bar. Local specialities include duck and of course, Limousin beef. Good English is spoken. In high season it is best to book a table in advance In summer, there is a nice outside seating area with lovely lake views. Activities There are village festivals at various times of the year: Funfair on Easter Friday & Saturday A small travelling circus on Easter Sunday Festival of the Lake, with fireworks, on the last Saturday of July Five concerts over 10 days in July & August Musical nights of Cieux, 1st week of August A local market on the 28th of each month. In summer there is usually a disco each weekend. You will find public tennis courts in the village, and there are several horse riding centres nearby. There are many marked walks in the area, which is crisscrossed by paths of several grades, Grande Radonnee, PR, and IGN. Several of these traverse Les Monts Blond, a range of wooded hills rising to around 600m, with lots of pleasant but not too strenuous routes, both for walkers and mountain bikers. The whole area is dotted with lakes, large and small, many of which have watersports facilities. La Bergerie is a 20 minute drive from Limoges airport. Ryanair flies daily from Stansted to Limoges. Fares start at around £60 return. Car hire is easily arranged at Limoges airport, (over the Internet) but advance booking is essential. Trains from Paris take 3 hours and soon, the TGV Paris to Limoges will take only 95 minutes. The drive from Calais is around 450 miles and 6½ hours driving time, and depending upon your route, road tolls are as little as £16. .
