Front view
This beautiful, original small château is set in parkland, formal gardens and paddocks totalling approximately 3.5 hectares. Both wings of the château were built in 1591. One wing was sympathetically rebuilt in the 1820's after being destroyed by fire some 200 years previously during the war between the Catholics and Protestants. The complete history of the château is available, dating back to 1591.
The Château has wrought iron entrance gates to the main drive and front door and a second entrance with a drive sweeping to the back - the trades' entrance. The gardens are impressive with mature trees, an old cider press and formal lawns. The front door opens to reveal the beautiful panelled hall with the main oak staircase leading to the first floor. To the right is the formal dining room (31m²), wood panelled with a fireplace containing an antique "Salamander" stove and then on to the magnificent drawing room with a marble fireplace (31m²). To the left, the next main room is the old library (17m²) with fireplace, stained glass door panels, wood panelling and the original parquet de Versailles floor. Walk in storecupboard. The kitchen (35m²) has access to the garden and is, again, another room with original features and character. A huge granite inglenook fireplace predominates one wall while under the back windows are the original stone cooking appliance and a granite sink. The centre of the ceiling is recessed, known as an "oeil de boeuf" or bullseye, and contains light fittings. This feature is repeated in several of the rooms. The servants staircase leads from the kitchen to the first floor. A pantry and utility room lead off from the kitchen. Door from kitchen to an inner hallway and then to the library. These rooms are the main downstairs rooms, there is also a new small study and a bar. The oak staircase leads to the first floor and to the Rose room (35m²) with beautiful wood flooring, and of course, a fireplace. The remaining bedrooms (10, 14, 20, 24, 26m²) all have either dressing rooms or toilet cabinets. The staircase continues to the second floor, the attic covering the whole area of the château. This is ripe for conversion in further accomodation, if required. The large cellars which reach under the entire property, still contain the original cider barrels from when the property was run as a successful cider producing château some years ago. The building is structurally in very good condition and is, for the main part,in its original state with some outstanding original features. Although totally habitable, the property is in need of some restoration work in order to restore it to its former glory. The château benefits from mains electricity, mains water and modern oil-fired central heating. There is a separate house in the grounds, the gardener's cottage, which is of colombage construction and in need of sympathetic restoration. In addition, there is the former coach house, now a garage/workshop, a stable block with hay loft above, a barn and hangar, a large greenhouse and a purpose built vegetable garden with full watering system. The château is situated along a quiet country lane; a short walk to the small village centre with a shop/café. Two large towns offering all amenities, and typical French markets are a 10 minute drive from the property. Agent's notes: This type and calibre of property very rarely comes to the market, when they do, they create an enormous amount of interest. This château will be no exception. The château requires re-decoration and some re-furbishment, as the very realistic asking price indicates. This is only cosmetic and superficial, nothing structural is required. Many of the rooms have been recently re-plastered, including the main entrance hall and staircase. Many photos are available on request.
