View of the Wing
This is a rare opportunity to purchase a wing of a most important Chateau in South Western France. The chateau dates from the 11th century and was built as a fortified castle in times of unrest based around a central courtyard. It was updated in the 16th and 18th centuries but many of the original features remain.
Starting its life as the home of the de Pomme family in the 11th century it was later purchased by the Dukes of Orbeisson in 1160 and for the next 450 years remained their principal home and stronghold becoming the most important Castle of the Comminges region. It is rich in the history of the period with a coat of arms above the door incorporating the 'Besant' showing that the family took part in the Crusades. The Chateau passed to the widow of Prince Gaspard and then to M. Cambon the president of the Parliament of Toulouse at the time, his signature is still visible on the wall of the music room. When the French Revolution came the family fled abroad and the Chateau fell into decline. As happened with many similar properties parts were demolished and the stones used to rebuild the village school and the Church of Labastide Paumes. Even up until 1990 items were being stolen. From then on a comprehensive restoration began..... The Chateau is now five separate units two of which are for sale. The wing known as the Salle D'Armes requires finishing and offers the new owners the opportunity to tailor the interior to their own requirements in a space of roughly 300 square meters Entering the wing through the hardwood double glazed doors from the courtyard we arrive in the Salle D'Armes, (there are two sets of arched doors giving onto the courtyard), a monumental fireplace from the 16th Century and huge beamed ceiling moving into the chapel with vaulted ceiling two medieval arched windows and early sculpted niche, (there is a spy hole where the Count could sit and watch if he did not wish to take part in the proceedings). From the Salle D'Armes we move into the circular tower which has been completely rebuilt and a room which has been planned as the kitchen complete with archers window. Taking the spiral staircase to the first floor we have a further tower room with original fireplace and then into the Bedroom with the remains of a vaulted ceiling( there are existing quotes to replace the vaulting if necessary) The first floor salon of 73 square meters features a late 15th Century fireplace and mullioned window overlooking the courtyard to the west and another overlooking fields to the east. The tower is topped off with a splendid 24 square meter roof terrace. The property is connected to main services but does require the new owner to instal a septic tank.
