The history of "Château du Lindois".

This very impressive castle was without any doubt built on the old foundations by Guy de Chastaigner, baron of Lindois, at the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century.

This important and powerful character belonged to and old noble and chivalrous family and became chamber master of two French kings: Louis XI and Charles VIII. He died in the castle of Lindois in 1547.
The castle is believed to be in the hands of this protestant family until the French revolution. Since then, several families owned it and later part of it was even used as a town hall and also a school settled in one of the best conserved part of the castle.

Later, this property was slowly neglected until it was almost totally destroyed, except for some major parts that were converted into a house with annexes. The remainders of the castle are now spread over the estate and hidden under the ivy.

This noble property was left as almost a ruin in 1973. The castle, that had been partly rebuilt in in the 17th century, had a central main building with a first floor that was decorated with Renaissance windows structures.

Both on the left and on the south side of the main building, two other annexes were joined with it. This part was in a reasonable condition in 1973, as it was inhabited. Today that part of the castle is still there and was since then renovated several times.
The annexes, still in use today, were spared and are connected to the part that is now the main house. Opposite of it stands the beautiful portal of the former church of Lindois, that was torn down in 1924.
All elements of the castle that were found have been placed under the care of the historic heritage society.
