During the last War Germany established a naval base in the old port, which became the set for the film Das Boot and scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark. The old port today is lined with restaurants and bars, serving fantastic seafood dishes accompanied by the wonderful local cognac. Nearby Port des Minimes is a lovely marina and the parade is a favourite with both tourists and locals. There is also a ferry to the beautiful Ile de Re and its beautiful beaches.
