Thollon-les-Mémises is a pretty alpine village that is situated on a plateau at an altitude of 1,000 metres. This affords it the most stunning views over Lake Geneva and the west coast of Switzerland — so much so that the views are mentioned in the Michelin guide. It is renowned as a warm and friendly village and that warmth is extended to visitors and new inhabitants alike. The village has all modern amenities, including restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets and hotels.

Obviously, winter sports are popular here and it provides great skiing for beginners and intermediates and has 50 kilometres of runs that are served by lifts. It also has six kilometres of cross country trails and a terrific snow park for fans of snowboarding.

Other activities are available of a non-winter variety and they include walking/hiking, swimming, climbing, fishing, sailing, paragliding, hang gliding, golf, tennis and Evian spa — just a few miles away.

The closest international airport is at Geneva about 35 miles/56 kilometres away. A new high-speed rail link is due to open this year (2010) linking London and Geneva. The distance from Calais is roughly 550 miles/885 kilometres.
