Vienne is an old town on the left bank of the Rhône River, about 30km south of Lyon. It has a fascinating history dating back to Roman times. It has variously been part of the Kingdom of Burgundy, as well as the capital of Provence and also part of the Holy Roman Empire, until it was eventually absorbed into the Kingdom of France, in about 1450, and over time ceded its importance to Lyon and Grenoble.
The Roman influence on Vienne is easily noticeable in the town centre. There is the Roman Theatre, which now hosts an annual two-week jazz festival in July, a temple dedicated to Augustus, and other important Roman ruins including thermal baths. All in all, it is home to 4 museums and over 40 historical monuments.
The finest view of the town can be found atop Le Mont Pipet, which is above the Roman Theatre and is one of the five hills that surround the town.
Vienne also hosts the largest street market in the region every Saturday, with nearly 400 stalls that stretch over 2kms.

The nearest international airport is in Lyon, as is the TGV — although this can also be accessed in Valence, which is roughly 45 minutes south of the town. The motorway junction is located nearby and offers connections to Paris, Lyon, Grenoble, Marseille and Chambery among others.
