None of the hamlets making up the commune of Chalais have any shops, not even a boulangerie. The town of Loudun has everything needed, and on the Chalais side of the town is a modern hypermarket (Super U) and large hardware store (Weldom).
The Loire river flows from east to west some 40km to the north, and many of the famous chateaux are to be found in that area
