This charming cottage (c 1760) is in the small hamlet of Le Rôty, near Gibourne, in the department of the Charente-Maritime. Set within an old farmyard and lovingly restored, it retains many original features including a fireplace, as well as the original stone sink kept as a feature. The cottage provides the typical one-room living of the period: a large room with living area and double bed, but with the addition of a separate shower room. It also has the additional sleeping facility of a twin-bedded attic bedroom (up a steep stairway).
The cottage has been delightfully furnished by the owner, a dedicated antique and curio hunter, and has an eclectic variety of vintage items - furniture, tableware, glasses, etc.
There is a delightful private garden, overlooked by a salle d'été - a covered dining area with table and chairs - as well as access to the extensive grounds.
The surrounding vineyards, woodland and fields of sunflowers provide lovely local walks and cycle rides (bicycles available) on the little-used roads and tracks criss-crossing the spectacular countryside, with its huge sky and stunning sunsets. The region is the sunniest in France, after the Côte d’Azur, and Le Rôty is within easy reach of the chic resorts of La Rochelle and Royan, the Atlantic beaches, Ile de Ré and Ile d’Oléron, as well as the historic towns of Saintes, Angoulême, Rochefort and, of course, Cognac. The city of Bordeaux and its vineyards are only an hour or so away.
