It's fascinating that in such a tiny (25 km) island one can find so diverse landscapes. The villages are nice too and are being renovated by urban people so with taste and discreet refinement. You find good restaurants and nice boutiques. It's a little bit Martha's vineyard or Cape Code of the French Atlantic coast.

La Rochelle

La Rochelle, just 17 km away, called “the white city” was founded by the Romans and developped through out the ages a strong and lucrative merchant activity making the town with its fortified port, its mansions, and narrow streets with arcades, the most attractive and romantic city of the Atlantic coast from Nantes to Bordeaux. La Rochelle also boasts the largest leisure port in Europe with over 3000 moorings, a lively marina, a wide range of shopping facilities and restaurants to suit all tastes. La Rochelle is also a buoyant city with a great sense of “joie de vivre” promoted by the thousands of local students as well as by the town with its famous events such as the “La Solitaire du Figaro” sailing race or the “Francofolies” music festival, and its very diverse cultural activities including some renowned museums.
