Maisons en Pignon / Front-Gabled Houses in Franche Comte

This is a very particular and typical style of house found in the Franche Comte. This style of property is mainly found in the Doubs and Jura departments. With massive steep roofs, these traditional properties are easily recognisable.

In French, front-gabled houses are called Maisons en Pignon. In certain areas the ground floor is often the only part of the property made of stone, with upper parts of the house build of wood. The attic is always made of wood (using vertical wood paneling on walls). Windows are numerous and small to medium in size.

The gable end often faces the road but primarily it faces the valley. Often providing outstanding views and adding value of this style of property. These Franche Comte properties, especially those made of wood found in rural areas, blend seamlessly with the local environment.

Traditional front-gabled houses in rural areas are often farmhouses. Front-gabled houses found in urban areas are sometimes painted in vivid warm colours. They generally have red roof tiles.

Some of these traditional houses have balconies, some others have an external wooden frame attached the gable, but all respect the typical style of the front-gabled house. Many restored properties have had their windows enlarged.
