Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur Road Network and Travel

Accessing Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur is possible in many ways. Its road network allows the inhabitants to reach France big cities and Italy really swiftly.

  • Nationale 7 has long been the "road of holidays" or "road of sun" as Frenchmen called it some decades ago, the region being one of the favorites for French holidaymakers. Nowadays the region is really well connected to Italy and thus the rest of Europe.
  • PACA is one of the most urbanised regions in France with 5 huge urban poles (Cannes/Grasse/Antibes, Nice, Marseille/Aix, Toulon, Avignon) where 62% of the population does gather. This means cars are foremost used for transport except in places where public transport is really developed ie city centres.
  • The quality of the road network is outstanding, even the less frequented ones.

Most cities have motorways allowing to avoid the city centre, that are free. All this allows a smooth and swift traffic in the region. Here is a comprehensive list:
  • A7 between Lyon and Marseille
  • A8
  • A7 between Nice Italy
  • A50 between Marseille and Toulon
  • A51 between Marseille and Gap
  • A52 between Aubagne and Aix
  • A54 between Salon de Provence, Saint-Martin-de-Crau, Arles and Nîmes
  • A55 between Marseille and Martigues
  • A57 between Toulon
