NEWSFLASH - FRENCH HEALTH CARE

We have learned this morning from a French Government source that 'inactive' expats living in France as at 30th Sept 07, and already registered with the State health insurance system (the 'CMU'), may well be allowed to remain in the system.

We understand that a Ministerial 'cabinet' of senior civil servants considering the whole issue has given their in principle approval to the proposal, which is now being considered by the French health insurance body.

If approved by them it will mean that there will be no change in the regulations for those who were in the CMU as at 30th Sept 07.

Needless to say, we do not want to raise false hopes, and we will need to await formal publication of the new guidance before we can say anything definitive. However, what we can be definitive about is that this proposal is one that is receiving some heavyweight support.

For everyone else who is under retirement age and 'inactive', there remains the requirement to take out private health insurance. This may well include those living in France as at 30th Sept 07 on an E106.

You can discuss in more detail in our Forum.
