The house is situated 5km from the busy market town of St Hilaire du Harcouet. The towns has a good range of shops, restaurants, bars and an excellent weekly market (held on a Wednesday). There are also several large supermarkets.
The property itself is in the heart of the famous bocage countryside (think lush rolling countryside, pretty rivers, Normandy cattle and apple orchards). The area is known for its food, especially cheese, beef, cider, Calvados and fresh sea food including the famous oysters and fish direct from Cancale just along the coast. Cancale oyster sellers come to St Hilaire on Sunday mornings and sell top grade, fresh oysters.
The village of Lapenty (4km away) has a bar, shop, fishing lake with exercise track and children’s play area. The village also has Chez Agnes, a local restaurant offering five courses of predominantly local meat and produce cooked on the open fire every day of the year with wine, cider and coffee included for €14 a head.
There’s a great deal to do in the area including cycling, horse riding and walking/running on over 7000km of trails in Manche alone. The area benefits from sandy beaches that stretch for miles offering great days out as well as being able to experience the very real history of the D-Day landings. Sailing is available from a number of locations as well as trips to the Channel Islands and both sea and fresh water fishing.
The famous attraction of Mont St Michel is about 30km (approx 35 mins) away and the D-Day landing beaches are a must-see (approx 90mins drive away)
The ferry ports of Caen (90mins), St Malo (75 mins), Cherbourg (2hrs), Le Havre (21/2 hrs) and Roscoff (2h 45min) are all within an easy drive and serve the South Coast of England.
