Property Description
Ref 68405DD: A little history for a 15th century castle.
Dating from the 15th century, built on the model of Gascon castles, with a main building and pavilion topped with a pointed roof, it was modernized and enlarged before the First World War. The roof of the pavilion replaced by a terrace and a second pavilion, also with a terrace, was added to give more symmetry. This very attractive ensemble occupies a privileged and non-floodable location on the left bank of the Garonne.
He belonged to the Dampierre family. We find a trace of it in the national archives in these terms: "Aymar de Dampierre was involved in the expedition of Marie-Caroline, Duchess of Berry (1798-1870), in 1832-1833. Landed in Provence in April 1832 and disappointed by the failure of her attempt to raise the towns of the South of France, the duchess wanted, despite all contrary opinions, to reach the Vendée, dividing them between their castles of Plassac (Charente-Maritime) and Vignau. -en-Marsan (Landes) and Saumon-en-Gascogne (Lot-et-Garonne), Marie-Caroline de Berry first went to Saumon, but noting the absence of the Dampierres, she went to the castle of Saint -Philip, in Saint-Nicolas de La Balerme (Lot-et-Garonne), at Guy de Dampierre (1773-1862), cousin of the Marquis Aymar, in order to know where to contact the latter"
It is, however, interesting to note that, during the Wars of the Fronde (civil war which took place in France, from 1648 to 1653, during the minority of Louis XIV with the singular fact that several women played a determining role), the castle de Saint-Philip was, during the siege of Caudecoste, transformed into a garrison. Part of the army, commanded by the Duke of Bellegarde, established its winter quarters there. The Marquis de Chouppes, who succeeded him, even had his headquarters in the castle. From there, he was in communication with the regiments housed at Sauveterre, Layrac and Goulens
