Today, we find ourselves in one of the prettiest villages in the Gers. One of those places that never saw much reason to keep up with the times. Old stone houses, quiet little streets, a certain idea of happiness.
The house stands in the heart of the village. Yet, beyond its walls, the countryside takes over. Rolling hills, fields, little patches of woodland. The views stretch far into the distance. Very far indeed.
From the street, nothing particularly remarkable. The house keeps its secrets. You have to step inside. A stone staircase worn smooth by centuries, ancient beams, walls that have seen a thing or two. It feels like an English cottage. A proper one. Not something out of an interiors magazine. There is that delightful, slightly haphazard charm of houses with a past.
Stone is everywhere. So is wood. The furniture looks as though it has always belonged. The sitting room, with its high ceiling and skylights, invites you to do absolutely nothing. Which is quite something.
In the kitchen, a range cooker tucked into an old stone recess, colourful tiles and a large wooden table. One can easily imagine lunches beginning at one o'clock and somehow lasting until nightfall.
The bedrooms have retained that slightly old-fashioned softness of English country houses. Whitewashed beams, ancient walls, gentle colours. A mezzanine adds a little touch of whimsy.

And then there is the garden.

Old stone walls, a wooden terrace, lavender, a few ornamental grasses. Nothing showy. You feel at home almost immediately.
At the far end, a low stone wall. Beyond it, the landscape. The rolling Gascon hills, golden fields, distant ridges fading into the horizon. You sit down. You look. You lose track of time.
A village garden with the views of a country house. Not something you come across every day.

We love this house for precisely what it is. An English lady who has chosen Gascony to enjoy her finer days. She has character, a few eccentricities and charm in abundance. She makes no attempt to please everyone.

Perhaps that is exactly why she is so appealing.
