Property Description
Majestic château dating from the early 17th century, largely restored and set within an intact Baroque estate.
Built on the banks of a river, this exceptional château embodies the transition between medieval heritage and the emergence of French classical architecture. A remarkable 15th-century keep remains from the former stronghold. In the early 17th century, the medieval complex was transformed under the direction of a prominent family from Poitou, giving rise to an elegant H-plan residence inspired by the Henri IV style, heralding the Louis XIII style.
Behind its understated façades, enlivened by Renaissance decoration and trompe-l’œil effects, the château has a coherent interior layout. Arranged around a grand staircase, it retains many original features: French-style ceilings, stone and terracotta tile floors, and monumental fireplaces. These were enhanced in the 18th century with refined parquet floors and marble, and further additions were made in the 19th century.
Designed as a place for entertaining as well as living, the estate stands out for the harmony of its proportions and the quality of its architecture, which is both simple and striking.
Laid out from the 17th century onwards, the estate offers an outstanding landscaped setting: a water-filled canal formed from the former moat, tree-lined vistas, Renaissance-inspired formal gardens, a vegetable garden, an orchard and woodland. The outbuildings complete the estate, including a large orangery used for receptions and events, stables, a former menagerie and an impressive dovecote.
A distinctive and beautifully preserved property, this château offers a vivid account of four centuries of history and is a rare example of architectural authenticity.
Fees included: 4.5% including VAT, payable by the buyer. Price excluding fees: €7,177,033. Not subject to an energy performance assessment.
