The Cost of Car Insurance in France

Friday 03 March 2017

How much might you expect to pay each year to insure your car in France?

Figures released recently by the insurance industry in France show that the average cost of a third party insurance policy in 2016 was €445 a year; the average cost of a comprehensive policy was €850.*

As is the case elsewhere, the actual amount you will pay is going to depend on a range of factors - the type of policy, type and age of vehicle, and your driver profile - age, gender and claims record.

Rates will also depend on where you live, and a geographic analysis of the 2016 figures show that at a regional level Brittany has the lowest average overall rates (€505), whilst the highest are in the Ile-de-France (€697).

Within the cities, Marseilles has the highest average rates (€934), followed by Nice (€816) and Saint-Etienne (€791).

The table below shows average rates for third party, third party fire and theft, and comprehensive cover for each department of France.

Those with a 50% no-claims bonus can expect to pay substantially less than is shown here, whilst those with an accident record will pay higher rates, depending upon vehicle.
