The Cost of House Insurance in France

Saturday 13 May 2017

How much might you expect to pay each year to insure your house in France?

According to recently released figures from the French insurance industry, the average cost of a house insurance policy in 2016 was €347 a year.

A geographic analysis of the figures show that at a regional level Brittany has the lowest average overall rates, whilst the highest are in the Ile-de-France.

The actual amount you will pay is going to depend on a range of factors, notably the size and location of the property, the value of the contents cover, and whether you are a tenant or an owner-occupier.

Properties located in the main urban conurbations have the highest rates, with in Paris, Nice, Marseilles and Lyon being the most expensive.

Although average rates can only provide an indicative guide, the table below shows the cost of a 'comprehensive' house insurance policy for an home owner of a property measuring between 120m2 and 160m2, for each department of France.

As the number of properties in urban areas weighs these figures to the higher end, you can expect to pay less for the same property in a rural location.
