Aquitaine Transport

The chief reason why Aquitaine has to this date been a relatively well-kept secret, is the fact that it has been difficult to fly there. That has now changed with the introduction of numerous low-cost airlines flying to a selection of airports across the region and just around the corner in Spain.

There are 7 airports serving the region and flights from London take up to 2 hours.

Of course, the ferry and car option is still a good one. Taking a ferry to the north coast port of St Malo will leave you with a 6-7 hour drive to Bordeaux or 8-9 hours to Biarritz – no further than driving to Languedoc, Provence or the Côte d'Azur.

Better still, you can take a ferry to Santander or Bilbao in Spain and have a much shorter drive (1.5 hrs Bilbao-Biarritz) along the coast and up into Aquitaine. Because the crossing is that much longer, the Biscay ferries are bigger and have more activities to entertain the kids, including a swimming pool. There’s also a great chance of spotting dolphins, pilot, minke and sperm whales - the P&O ferry Pride of Bilbao even has its own Wildlife Officer.

Or, sit back and relax and let the train do the work - with Rail Europe you can take a train all the way to Aquitaine and you can even take your car too.
