Sauze Vaussais is a town of Poitou Charentes comprising 1,640 inhabitants. The commune was born from the gathering of Sauze and Vaussais in 1790. The area was the backdrop of many wars and fights in ancient times. The town and its surroundings’ economy has always been mainly agricultural.
The main hallmarks of the town are its charming centre and its two main buildings: the bell tower, it the main street, and an ancient pigeonnier located at the entrance of the town. Historical heritage: the town is proud of its past and there are many things to learn about this part of Poitou Charentes and the town itself. Many vestiges remain such as the gorgeous town hall and many typical buildings / monuments dotting the town. The roman church is a must. An ideal environment to set up and un a gite business as the are is not overcrowded with Brits (yet).
Activities: Sauze Vaussais has developed leisure and holiday activies around the town. A lake welcomes the inhabitants in summer, especially those fond of fishing. The town also provides camping facilities and a swimming pool, assets easy to sell to holidaymakers/ visitors. Mini golf, tennis, cycling and horse riding are available too. This town is also a good starting point to discover the region and its many natural and cultural assets.
Transport links: the town could be described as remote but it is actually the price of tranquility as Sauze Vaussais can be reached swiftly. Poitiers and La Rochelle airports, offering flights to severl UK cities, are within one hour. TGV high-speed trains stop in Poitiers and Niort. Getting there by road is easy too thanks to the main road linking Sauze Vaussais to Melle and Poitiers (then, take the motorway and get to Paris in 3hrs).
Traditions: Poitou Charentes is a land of traditions and hearty food. The street markets of Sauze Vaussais are ideal to discover it and get the best products. An excellent moment to meet the locals and producers too – every Thursday and Saturday.
Up and coming area: Sauze Vaussais is still little-known amongst foreigners and offers moderate prices. The location is ideal for families willing to settle, with many efforts being made by the mayor to improve the quality of life (schools, natural activities…). Prices are low and farmhouses can be bought at bargain prices.
In this rural part of Deux Sevres, every house is more or less influenced by the Charentaise house which explains why agents in the area offer mainly charentaise properties or manors and bastides houses based on this model.
These stone-built properties are large, as is the piece of land forming a generous courtyard and a garden. Stones in the walls are generally exposed. The roof is gently sloping and tiled. The shape of the lengthwise house is that of a rectangle. They often have a cellar (chai) attached and in the Sauze Vaussais area, several outbuildings hence they make ideal gites. Charente houses are often gathered and form a hamlet, contrary to what happens to the north of the Deux Sevres where houses dot more the countryside.
